A predictive model often forms the nucleus of a DST. Models embody the quantitative relationships that enable environmental professionals to make educated predictions about the state of a system and the system's response to a change. For example, DSTs may be used in the context of environmental decision making to assess changes to the system in response to:
- Removal of a specific volume of contaminated soil
- Initiation of a pump-and-treat remedy
- An acceleration of natural attenuation processes
